pMartin Place is a pedestrian mall in the central business district of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia which is one of the most iconic public spaces in Australia. Martin Place is synonymous with corporate Australia, home to theReserve Bank of Australia, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia and Macquarie Bank, as well as other corporate headquarters and the Sydney GPO. The Seven News Centre is also located on Martin Place, from which many live national news programmes are broadcast. Martin Place has become a national Australian icon in popular culture for attracting high-end productions and actors to the area. Martin Place runs between George Street and Macquarie Street, and provides entrances to the Martin Place railway station below street level. Other cross streets include Pitt Street, Castlereagh Street, Elizabeth Street and Phillip Street.br /
Martin Place was opened in 1891 and was named in honour of the three time Premier of New South Wales and Chief Justice of Supreme Court of New South Wales, Sir James Martin. Closed to traffic in 1971, Martin Place is surrounded by many heritage buildings and features the 1927 World War I ANZAC Cenotaph, water fountain, entertainment area, railway access and pedestrian seating. pMany people had gathered at the Tiger Rainforest exhibit for the 11am Keeper's talk, and Binjai was not happy to be the centre of so much attention!br /

Binjai, the beautiful Sumatran female tiger today was snarling, growling and was obviously quite angry. It was fantastic to witness her ferocity - at very close quarters! She came right up to the viewing windows, inches away from me, and the other human visitors.br /
At such close range, it was next to impossible to focus properly, and she was in no mood to co-operate and pose for photos!br /
The sound of her deep throated growling and snarling was truly awe-inspiring to hear from a few feet away!br /

Binjai is probably quite hostile due to the tell-tale scents of her two adult cubs still being all over the enclosure. Binjai is now 6 years old, and the cubs Isha and Satu, now 24 months old were her first litter. Some months ago, Binjai rejected her cubs, and they were kept separate from her for their protection over the past 3 months. Binjai would certainly fight them, and would try to drive them away.br /
br /
Isha and Satu have now gone, and soon enough their scents will fade, leaving Binjai much more settled as the Queen of the Sumatran tiger rainforest.br /
br /
To add this, Binjai is probably impatiently waiting for a feed, which often accompany the Keeper talks.br /

Shortly Binjai was given a milk feed, which she loves.br /

Melbourne Zoo has a wonderful enclosure for the tigers - it is styled very much as Sumatran rainforest, with lots of trees, and even a pond to swim and play in.br /
Melb Zoo staff are taking part in a proper preservation program for Sumatran wildlife - not just joining an international captive breeding program (although they do, and that is vital given the parlous state of Sumatran tigers in the wild) - they actively buy back land in Sumatra with the intent to rehabilitate the land as a wildlife preserve, to give animals such as the tiger and the Sumatran Orang-utan a chance to flourish again.br /
